Those of you who took Carol DuBosch's workshop, "Folded Pen Adventures," soon discovered that Carol brought a thoughtful thoroughness to her instruction. Even those of us who had many times before made folded pens came away with a greater understanding of the process, a feeling of success, and perhaps best of all, a folded pen specifically tailored to our own lettering. Before that workshop ended, by acclamation, we had asked Carol to return to work with us again. After much deliberation, we've asked her to work with us on Bone.
The message in all of this? Even though you may have taken Bone before, you haven't taken Carol's Bone, or as she referred to it in a conversation, "Bookhand with a Twist." Really look at her letters; they are interesting, controlled, and usable.
As Carol describes Bone: "It is a contemporary style of calligraphy named because of the bone- like shape of the basic stroke. Bone is a wonderful exercise in pen manipulation and designing the spaces within and around the letters. Bone is the perfect casual choice for many creative projects."
While here, Carol told us about her extensive study of the lovely Bister inks, and we asked if she could incorporate those into our next venture with her. After we decided on Bone as our topic, Carol responded saying, "Bone is wonderful for use of Bisters since there is a great deal of ink on the page, and it is perfect for blending." Another reason to take this workshop!
Carol Tells Us About Herself
“Any day that I can open a bottle of ink is a good day. It gets even better if I can create art, make a mark- making tool, or teach what I know to someone. Words are my muse, and I love being able to use them as a lettering artist. When I hear the words, I ponder them and savor them for a spell and then interact with them using art materials. It is absolutely the best job ever.”
"I have been a calligrapher in Portland, Oregon, since I was first introduced to nibs and ink in 1959 as a high school art student. In the years since, I have gained a degree in Graphic Design and have studied with every major calligrapher in the US and Europe. I have been teaching college level and private classes in the Northwest along with workshops throughout the United States and most recently, in Italy. I have directed three International Calligraphy Conferences in Portland, bringing 500 scribes together for a week of study and sharing.”
"I am interested in every aspect of the field of calligraphy, from the formal invitation to writing on walls. I enjoy seeking out ways to stretch the boundaries of my art. As a life- long learner, I am looking forward to the next new thing.”
