THE SPIRIT BEHIND THE PEN

A SLIDE PRESENTATION BY MARIJO CARNEY

The Spirit Behind the Pen features slides of hand lettered art collected and organized by Marijo Carney from calligraphic artists around the nation. These artists reveal, often in their own words, the background stories, the emotion, the inspiration that urged their creations into being.

The pieces shown use a variety of materials, ranging from carved stone, wood, plastic and etched glass to more traditional applications of ink, gouache, and gilding. The viewer is made to see that each letterform, its color, size, shape and arrangement on the page, as well as the media used was chosen with great care and purpose.

Included in the presentation are slides of Marijo’s book, Nature’s Spirit, which was chosen to be in the Special Collection of handmade books at the internationally-known Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois. This slide show goes beyond merely presenting the visual image…it leads the audience to understand the rest of the story, …the inspiration that sparked the art…the spirit behind the pen.
